One of the questions I am often asked by new chinchilla owners is "How do I train my chinchilla?". The simple answer to that is "You don't, you train the owner!". You must first learn to get used to
Holding A chinchilla the correct way. start when young.
Once it is used to sitting on your lap or cushion. Then progress to allowing to run around a small room. In the following pics I illustrate the way I always recommend for allowing the chinchilla out for the first time. Do NOT allow to play on floor in a large room. If you put a chinchilla on the floor of a large room? you will often have to chase after it to get it back in.

In this pic, there are three chinchillas. They were brought to me to re-home as the owner could no longer look after them. They had been fed the wrong type of food and I had to get them changed over to a suitable healthy diet. This was easy. Contrary to what some may think a chinchilla will perhaps the first day refuse to eat the strange smelling pellets. However it should be noted a chinchilla will in most cases not starve itself. On the first day I mixed oats through the pellets. Second day without the oats. I am happy to say they changed over quite easily. Now to training an owner.
Get yourself as small as possible

food dish or treats outside cage and don't at first look at the chinchilla. being naturally curious animals and as can be seen they will come to the open door to investigate this strange giant who suddenly became small.

Here one of the chinchillas had ventured out to investigate, saw the food dish and is edging round the giant carefully. the other two were more cautious and waited

The chinchilla after feeding, then became curious about this strange being who did not move or scare her so much. Even came close enough to sniff at the hand. The other chinchilla meanwhile still watches from the cage.

The giant now has his head up and still the other chinnie looks on from the door of the cage

Lets try sitting up the next time with food dish in lap. Success, two chinchillas now out exploring and not afraid. It just takes time, love and masses of patience.
friendship sealed.
Now. I have made the great escape through that darned gate. Please, please someone, where do I put the fuel in this car for the great adventure.
