Fits/Shock and heat exhaustion (possible cause)
You suspect your chinchilla is in shock? this may be from heat exhaustion. It will be laying all out on side, listless, not responding to you. what temperature is your room at? I get so many calls at night from distressed owners who say their chinchilla is fitting and in shock. A chinchilla is not capable of coping with room temperatures which are too high. In most cases ( if its not a chinchilla who is old) the cause for these fits and shock is because it cannot cope with the central heating in modern homes.
read this page [Heat-stroke ]on how to make sure your chinchilla is not being overheated and thus in danger of fitting due to shock.
Electric shock due to chewing on cables.
Chinchilla may appear dazed, unconscious, trembling, obvious signs of burns to jawline and feet etc. Treat as in shock, phone vet for emergency appointment and prepare pet carrier with a soft towel. Do not feed chinchilla before hand and get to a vet A.S.A.P.
This lucky chinchilla survived after chewing on an electric cable. Thank you to owner for allowing us use of the pic she sent to us.
Shock/fitting due to injury or heatstroke (treatment)
If a chinchilla is in shock it may be laying not moving, mouth may be twisted or body laying at an unatural angle. It may be walking around with head/neck slightly twisted and walking in a circular movement or generally looking dazed.
A shock or fitting isn't nice to watch. teeth may be making a grinding noise too. this is normal in fitting. Chinchilla may urinate while fitting as well, this is again, normal in fits etc. You can clean your chinchilla's fur later in meanwhile just try to dry it off with kitchen towl. Treatment is the required thing right now.
treatment
Stay calm, being nervous can upset your chinchilla more. You need to act fast and do quick first-aid to stabilise your chinchilla. [if you suspect heatstroke get the temperature of the room down as soon as possible but not chilled. 17c -18c is a reasonable temp for a sick chinchilla - lower if possible for a chinchilla who is not sick of course - a chinchilla who is in shock or fitting should be removed from a large cage and placed in a pet carrier overnight with a part cover of a towel or similar over it.
Once in carrier and If you can do so, get to the vet A.S.A.P.
If as in most cases it is outwith vet hours then do some first-aid yourself to help your chinchilla.
If still fitting?
Leave chinchilla in carrier and keep quiet or sit with chinchilla on your lap to give some reassurance.
If it is awake and fits have stopped?
Dissolve some glucose or sugar - one teaspoonful in 1fluid ounce of warm water - and allow to cool right down. (not chilled as in a fridge) use a dropper or teaspoon or add to an empty water bottle and try to get chinchilla to drink this water to get it's sugar level up.
If chinchilla is able to eat? try a few raisins to raise blood sugars too.
Talk calmly and softly to your pet to reassure it while you are doing all this.
