 Eyes and Related Problems

A chinchilla does not have very good eyesight. They rely on their acute sense of hearing. Pay attention to your chinchilla and you will see they are usually waiting at the door in anticipation before you enter the room. This acute sense of hearing is what protects them in the wilds from predators.

Bright Eyes
A Chinchilla's eyes should look bright and alert with no crusting on the eyelids. If there's crusts or redness to eyelids do get your chinchilla checked by a vet.

Watery eye.
Don't always jump to the conclusion this may be tooth problems. I have known a breeder of experience who got this wrong. It may simply be the chinchilla is allergic to the chinchilla bath dust you are using. Try leaving the sand out for a week and see what happens, if the eye clears up? try a different sand for them.
If you think there may be a small grain of sand caught in the eye and causing irritation.... Boil some water and then allow to cool before flushing eye with this cooled water.
A good eye drop solution - or a mild antibiotic cream - you can buy at the pet store may also help a weepy eye if not too severe.

Constant Weeping Of Eye

This may indicate an infection in the eye or of course tooth problems. If an infection it is usually accompanied by yellow/white pus which crusts on the eyelds eventually making it impossible for the eye to open. To bathe off crusts, boil water and then allow to cool down completely to room temperature. Gently soak the eyelids to soften crusts with a piece of gauze as a wipe (cottonwool is not suitable as this often leaves fibres sticking to the eyelid. If you have an eye wash sachet handy in first-aid box as I do this is ideal too for washing the eyelids free from crusts. Please do see a vet if infection suspected. Your vet can supply a stronger antibiotic to clear infection quickly.

If tooth problems it will be accompanied by drooling of mouth and inability to eat pellets (or crumbling pellets) see here Teeth  problems page. It is imperative you see your vet to determine if this is Malocclusion or just tooth overgrowth due to not chewing their hay or wood etc.
